Bats Inside Your Home

Sometimes bats find their way into the various rooms of your home. This can be through an open door or window, a chimney, or from another room with a large bat infestation.

Regardless of how bats got there, you're going to want to remove them quickly. Not only is the bat's presence scary to a lot of people, but the bat can also cause some harm as these animals carry rabies.

But how do you go about removing a bat from these parts of your home?

Attacking Bats

Some people are tempted to attack the bat with whatever they can find. It seems like a logical approach as it gets rid of the animal, either by scaring them or killing them.

Yet this approach is far from simple. In fact, it's dangerous, difficult, and illegal.

This is dangerous because it involves you getting close to the bat. These animals might then scratch or bite you which can lead to an infection. You'd also be at risk of contracting rabies, which can result in paralysis and death if not treated immediately.

This approach is also often difficult because bats can fly well out of your reach. It'll be hard to keep up with them or hit them when they can easily evade your attacks.

Yet most importantly, this is an illegal approach and should not be tried. Most states protect bats as they're endangered animals. These flying mammals are also beneficial as they eat many insects who carry diseases or destroy crops, so it's in our best interest to preserve them, which is why these laws exist.

Letting Them Leave on Their Own

Since attacking the animal isn't a good solution, you should just try to leave the animal on its own. This sounds simple, but it's particularly effective.

When a bat ends up in your living room or elsewhere, it's probably frantic and frightened. It just wants to get away and find some safety, so why not help it leave?

If the room the bat is in already has a door or window, you should open it to give the animal the chance to leave. Make sure you dim the lights before you do so, as it makes the animal more comfortable and invites them to leave the house.

If they aren't leaving, you might have to wait a while, especially if the sun is still out. Try to wait until the sun sets before checking to see if the animal is gone or not. More often than not, the bat will have taken the opportunity to get out of there.

Sometimes the room the bat is in won't have access to a door or window. In these cases, you'll want to make loud noises to scare the animal into a room that has those things. Then you can follow the steps mentioned above.

Removing the Animal by Hand

If the bat isn't leaving on its own, you have no choice but to get involved yourself.

You should stay calm and wait for the bat to settle down and rest. That's when you should try to grab the animal with a towel, basket, or another device. With the animal in your grasp, take it outside and release it into the wild.

It's recommended you wear gloves and protective gear as you do this, as there's a chance the animals will bite or injure you as you handle them.
